The Statewide Work zone Information System (SWIS) will be a system aimed at improving the Traffic Work Zone monitoring and inspection process through the use of IoT technologies. The system includes two core technologies. The first technology is the design and development of traffic control device beacons that are able to communicate the location and state of any work zone traffic control assets (cones, barrels, arrow boards, etc.). The second functionality involves the SWIS server, which collects the beacon information but also acts as a digital repository for past, present, and future project traffic control plans. For active road maintenance projects, SWIS Server will let its users monitor a Work Zone in real time and contains algorithms for detecting non-MUTCD compliant work zone setups to assist on work zone inspections.
